Shi'a Politics
Shias represent about 10-15% of the Muslim world. They are concentrated in the Middle East, but they have traditionally played a subordinate role there. Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain are all Shia-majority countries. In Lebanon too they are the largest bloc. There is growing anxiety in many quarters over the emergence of a Shia Axis stretching from Iran to Lebanon which will shake up the balance of power in the region.
Middle East expert Vali Nasr talks about the latest developments there, and about his book The Shia Revival: How Conflicts Within Islam Will Shape the Future on a recent NPR interview.
