What is Terrorism? (June 22, 2006)

The subject of our IIF discussion this Thursday will be "What is a terrorist?" and we will attempt to come up with a workable definition of terrorism. Ginnie Sams will be our moderator.

Here are a few background items:
These two articles from the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia provide a good starting point:
Definition of Terrorism

The second of these contains links to numerous articles on the subject.

Here is an interesting Backgrounder from the Council on Foreign Relations:

Finally, here are several articles from different points of view that relate to our subject:

"One Man's Terrorist Is Another Man's Freedom Fighter"
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter
Is One Man's Terrorist Really Another Man's Freedom Fighter?

Is it terrorism or freedom fighting?
If any of you would like the e-mails I have sent out to the group when we have discussed the subject of terrorism in the past, let me know and I will forward those to you.

I was amazed that we all came to agreement on the definition of Terrorism with a capital 'T'. Well done Ginnie!

Some of the discussions we got into illustrated why the definition is elusive. For example, how do you distinguish between a guerilla fighter and a terrorist; between a serial murderer or assassin and a terrorist?
